Writing from MIDEM Music Conference in Cannes

Just a quick post to say hi. After what must have truly been one of the most painful flights to Europe ever (San Francisco to Amsterdam to Rome to Nice — thanks KLM!), I’ve spent the past couple of days attending the MIDEM conference in Cannes.

Very interesting to get an inside view to the concerns of the Music Industry, most of which are obviously around DRM and the mobile market. Our virtual world panel seemed to amuse most folks and come as a welcome respite to the long discussions about “Labels vs. Indies”. My avatar breakdancing got a nice response.

Two favorite moments/quotes:

(to Chris Anderson, Wired Editor and Long Tail author in the green room) “Hi Chris — just wanted to say hi in person — we’ve only met as avatars”.

“This year’s Myspace page is next year’s avatar”

Now it’s off to the airport for the (hopefully shorter) flight home. Au revoir!

With a bit of luck the music industry will learn from its past experiences and address issues a little bit more creatively and a more open mind.

DRM should be easier to implement given SL is propriety software - no doubt that the industry and Linden Labs are discussing this. And I’m not talking about audio streams but delivering music in a format within SL.

Music is one of the things I enjoy the most in SL, in fact. Going to a club and dancing around with other people (who share my own taste in music) whilst listening to a stream from a radio station. Beats listening to music on a MySpace page by far. I would happy to part with my hard earned Linden $ to purchase and share music this way. The price has to be right, of course.

The biggest challenge in my opinion is creating bridges between real life and metaverses. I think that the kind of experience can be enjoyed by most, but most will not be inclined to download the software and immerse themselves. What SL (or any other metaverse) needs is the ability to offer temporary and disposable avatars for when people browsing a web page, for example, click on the ’sladvert’ and drop into a commercial…

I cam across this article this morning in the French online journal Journal Du Net going into a bit of detail about the reason for the conference.
