Hollywood Reporter: CEO R. Steiger Leading Entertainment Industry into Future

The Hollywood Reporter profiled Reuben as one of five innovators setting the entertainment industry’s agenda.

The Reporter’s David Ward highlighted Reuben’s thoughts on helping the industry to get its collective head around virtual worlds and social media: “We focus our entire business on getting brands into online social environments in ways that aren’t interruptive. We’re getting a lot better at eliminating that blank stare within the first five minutes. And the way we do that is to get them to imagine if the [virtual] universe could become part of a television show or a movie — because that’s what virtual worlds enable. Somewhere in the not-too-distant future, there’s going to be a junction point between social networking and virtual worlds.”

When Reuben talks about this junction point, I picture a huge river pouring into the ocean - that’s where some of the world’s richest ecosystems flourish. So it will be for personal identity and entertainment as they pour into the Internet’s ocean of information, and it’s as natural and inevitable as water flowing downhill. Nothing interruptive about it…and it’s an ecosystem that will support professional creatives, casual content creators, and marketers of all kinds.

Couldn’t agree with you more. We haven’t really seen anything like this on the web yet. Obviously PS3 Home is Sony’s console play to this inevitability.

Also I’d add that the other obvious cohort in this social networking/virtual world convergence is casual gaming.

Products to keep an eye on in 2008 in this space include Conduit Labs upcoming product, Three Rings Whirled, Raph Kosters Metaplace (possibly - not sure how much it will feature sn), and our own soon-to-be-released SmallWorlds.
