Couldn't agree with you more.  We haven't really seen anything like this on the web yet.  Obviously PS3 Home is Sony's console play to this inevitability.

Also I'd add that the other obvious cohort in this social networking/virtual world convergence is casual gaming.

Products to keep an eye on in 2008 in this space include Conduit Labs upcoming product, Three Rings Whirled, Raph Kosters Metaplace (possibly - not sure how much it will feature sn), and our own soon-to-be-released SmallWorlds.
