Millions of Us presents. . . . .Wired Magazine’s Second Life HQ

Following up on the recent lecture by Wired’s Editor in Chief, Chris Anderson, that we did with Hamlet, we’re opening the gates to Wired’s SL HQ located here. The build is the result of some great and inventive building by MOU’s own Minxeh Volos, with scripting/effects by Falldeaf Weeks. We were inspired by that feeling one gets when first looking at a computer’s motherboard — the surprise at how the structures that move information so closely resemble a miniature city. We thought it would be cool to create a build where humans/avatars could move around like bits and electrons. After all, in SL, we’re all just data anyway.

Join us for the opening party this Saturday, October 21st, from 4-7 pm SLT.

I find the electrons flying around kind of spooky. Great work, folks!

Rik, you’re too easily spooked. What will happen to you when Halloween is upon us? I worry ;-)

  2. [...] Given Yossarian had his translator featured in wired I thought I should also pop along and see the Wired office in Second Life at the MillionsOf Us island. Its a suitably unusual build being staged as a printed circuit board and computer components. Aside from having the obvious but fantastic content, with a rich source of Wired covers to choose from this office appeared to have an old style projector screen. A nice little change from our flat screen TV’s The millionsofus island also had once of those quirky Toyota Scions. I have not got mine yet, but feel I need one. [...]

  3. [...] Speaking of Wired Magazine, they just opened their virtual offices in SL by throwing a virtual party today. Many gathered for the opening address by Wired magazine’s Chris Baker and Danny (didn’t catch full name), as well as a Millions of Us’ designer, Rodica. I suggested that they start a SL group so as to capture their readers who were present and they did so by creating one called “WireHeads” (search to join group in SL). I also asked them what their plans were now that they had an online presence and they said they weren’t sure yet. I told them I understood and that it’s always good to try something for yourself first anyway so you can discover the social affordances along the way. Besides the Wired folks, I got to meet a Millions of Us designer responsible for creating the Wired magazine offices, which looks like a life-sized computer motherboard (See my photo / their clever design rationale). Philip Linden stopped by to check out the party and I got to ask him if they could allow for items that could be destroyed (e.g. smashable TV sets). He liked the idea and said that he’s seen artists do that before. If you’re wondering why I asked such a weird question, perhaps you might understand why in future. For now, you can Teleport to Wired’s office to take a look. [...]
